Frequently Asked Questions

What is CRI and why does it matter?
CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source reproduces colors. Sunlight is 100; most LED lights are 80–95. For video, higher CRI (90+) means more accurate skin tones and less color cast. Budget lights often have lower CRI—you may notice skin tones look slightly off. Professional lights like the Godox SL-60W advertise 95+ CRI. For casual video calls, 80+ is fine; for content creation, aim for 90+.
USB vs AC power for lights—what's the difference?
USB-powered lights are limited to around 15–20W, so they're smaller and less bright. They're ideal for desk setups and travel. AC-powered lights can use 20–60W or more, producing more output. For a desk key light, USB power (Elgato Key Light Mini, Logitech Litra) is convenient. For full streaming setups, AC power (Elgato Key Light, Godox) gives you more headroom. Portable lights often use built-in batteries with USB charging.
Do I need a softbox?
Softboxes diffuse light for a softer, more flattering look. Bare LED panels can be harsh. Key lights like the Elgato Key Light have built-in diffusion. Godox and similar professional lights use Bowens mount—you add a softbox for best results. For most desk setups, built-in diffusion is sufficient. Add a softbox if you're doing professional work or want the softest possible light.
