Frequently Asked Questions

What does power delivery (PD) mean on a dock?
Power delivery is the maximum wattage the dock can pass through to your laptop via the USB-C/Thunderbolt cable. A 85W dock can charge most Ultrabooks and some MacBook Pros. A 96–100W dock covers MacBook Pro 14-inch and most 15-inch laptops. Workstations may need 130W. The dock uses some power for itself; the rest goes to your laptop. Match your laptop's power adapter for best results.
What is 2.5GbE vs 1GbE Ethernet?
1GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) supports up to 1 Gbps. 2.5GbE supports 2.5 Gbps. For most home and office networks, 1GbE is sufficient—your router or ISP may not exceed 1 Gbps. 2.5GbE matters if you have a multi-gig NAS, fast local network, or 2+ Gbps internet. The CalDigit TS4 offers 2.5GbE; most other docks have 1GbE. For typical use, 1GbE is fine.
Can I use a dock with a desktop PC?
Yes, if your desktop has a USB-C or Thunderbolt port with display support. Many motherboards now include Thunderbolt or USB-C with DisplayPort. You can use a dock to add ports and connect monitors. Note: desktop PCs don't need power delivery from the dock—the power delivery feature is for charging laptops. For desktops, the dock acts as a hub with display outputs.
