Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between GE Opal 1.0 and 2.0?
The Opal 2.0 adds WiFi, TrueFill (optional auto-fill), and a scale-inhibiting filter. Both produce the same nugget ice quality. The 1.0 has 24 lbs daily production; the 2.0 has 38 lbs. If you don't need smart features, the 1.0 at $449 is the better value.
Can I get nugget ice without spending $400+?
Yes. The Costway (~$222) and Magic Chef (~$199) produce real nugget ice. Texture isn't quite as good as GE Opal, but it's chewable pellet ice. Good for trying nugget ice before investing in an Opal. Production is slower and capacity is smaller.
Do nugget ice makers need to be cleaned?
Yes. All models need periodic cleaning to prevent scale and bacteria. GE Opal has a self-cleaning mode. Run a cleaning cycle every 1-2 months depending on water hardness. Use distilled water if your tap water is very hard to extend lifespan.
